Jake Diekman's break from all his worries leads to DL stint

Texas Rangers reliever Jake Diekman visited Cheers in Boston just before the All-Star break and purchased a souvenir glass mug from the iconic landmark where the hit sitcom of the 1980s and early 1990s was based.

Now it’s costing him time on the disabled list.

Diekman suffered a cut on his left index finger — that’s his pitching hand — just before the break when the mug he purchased broke inside his luggage. When he reached into his bag, he suffered the injury.

His DL stint is retroactive to July 6 and he is expected to return in about a week. He last pitched on July 5 during a series with the Red Sox.

Diekman has been a key member of the Rangers bullpen with a 2.73 ERA in 39 appearances this season. And now he has one of the stranger reasons for going to the disabled list in his clubhouse, but it’s not even close to the strangest injury suffered by a pitcher this season.
